A Walk Along Penn Yan's Main Street:
A Tour of Penn Yan's Historic Main Street
By Sue Lange, edited by Frances Dumas, Yates County Historian.
“A Walk Along Penn Yan's Main Street” reviews the history of Penn Yan from its early beginnings up to the late 1930s as it explores Main Street's buildings and their sites. Main Street makes up the core of Penn Yan's Historic District. Formed in 1989, the district covers, in addition to Main Street, Chapel Street from Main to Liberty Street, Clinton Street from Main to just beyond Collins Avenue, Court Street west to Liberty Street, Wagener Street and Water Street. Because of this district, buildings remain from the early 1800s.
This tour includes 278 illustrations – 40 in color, a brief history of Penn Yan's early years from its beginning up through the 1930s, a tour map, a timeline of important events from 1763 through 1939, separate tours of Penn Yan's Commercial and Residential Districts. Whether you take the time to walk along Main Street (less than a mile) and study each building, or take an armchair tour using the tour's extensive illustrations, you will find the Village's history fascinating.
